w I www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 79, Issue 23 l/l/eb Edition SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 March 21, 2014 Three years, three students, one recital By Alex Webster StaffWritei^^ O n Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m. Steven Heebner, Rachel Anthony, and Katie Smathers brought their vocal talents to the Porter Center for Performing Arts for their Junior Recital. They were accompanied on piano by Patricia Black and Vance Reese. They each performed about seven pieces from memory. Steven Heebner began the recital with his colorful baritone voice that immediately grabbed the audience’s attention. He began with classical pieces before showing off his range of repertoire with musical theatre selections. Heebner performed the song “My Friends,” from the musical “Sweeney Todd” with freshman mezzo-soprano Tori Franklin. He completed his section of the concert with a piece from “Beauty and the Beasf ’ titled “Me,” by Alan Menken. The next three selections were from Mozart’s opera, “The Marriage of Figaro.” They featured a solo from Heebner, a duet with Heebner and junior Rachel Anthony, and a duet between Anthony and Katie Smathers. Anthony then took the stage with her selections from Mozart, Schubert, and other notable composers. Her delicate manner was mesmerizing, especially during her piece, “The Black Swan.” For the third section, Katie Smathers wowed us with her range and repertoire. She sang the familiar “O Mio Babbino Caro,” by Gianni Schicchi. Her performance of “Do Not Go My Love,” by Richard Hageman, was filled with passion, longing, and hope. I was impressed at their skill and evidence of hard work. All three of the vocalists were beautiful, and they carried themselves like professionals. Based on their high levels of talent, I would have had no idea that these students were in an undergraduate program. Their voices, presentation, and professionalism were on point, and the three of them make an amazing team. r Tornados to Sharks; Brevard history made By Austin Johnson staff Writer F or the first time in Brevard College history athletes will be exploited to play overseas. Graduating seniors Gus Dukuly and Devon Holmes, will be playing football (not futbol, American football ) in Brazil. Dukuly will be leaving in a couple of weeks and Holmes will depart following graduation this May. The duo decided to sign with the “Foz Do Iguacu Black Sharks” because of its “family” feel. The “Foz do Iguacu Black Sharks” is an American Football team formed mid-2008, in the city of Foz do Iguacu. It is not only a team but a "Sports Association", which holds approximately 70 players. When asked about their motivations for playing Dukuly said “I decided to go to the next level because it has always been one of my dreams/goals, and I felt like I had something to prove to the ones that doubted or didn’t believe in my goals.” “To be honest, all I ever wanted to be growing up was a high school football player after watching my uncle win the state championship. I never saw myself playing college football like my dad who is in the Tuskegee Athletic Hall of Fame. But football has always around me and in me, so when Brevard offered me a scholarship to play football I couldn’t resist. Likewise, I feel as if this is a once in a life time opportunity which allows me to reach a peak that even my dad and uncle didn’t -and they were my role models. I have been counted out my whole career so now it is time to represent for my family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and this institution” Holmes said. The main goal the athletes have while in Brazil is to network as much as possible while giving it their all on the field. Rachel Anthony, Steven Heebner, and Katie Smathers take a final bow.
